Southwest adding new Golden State route from San Diego International Airport

It’s never too early to book your summer vacation, even if you’re just about to sit down to Thanksgiving dinner.

Which is why you may want to hear that Southwest Airlines, already operating hundreds of flights every week out of San Diego International Airport’s Terminal 1, announced this week it was adding a new route to its menu.

Starting Aug. 4 of next year, travelers from America’s Finest City will be able to hop up to Santa Barbara, its 44th destination from San Diego. The flight will be just once a day, according to the airline.

The carrier plans on boosting its daily flights from SAN to an all-time high of 139 scheduled departures on peak days during August and September of 2026. That’s a lot of work for just one runway. In other Southwest news, the airline said that, beginning that same day in August, it planned to double daily round-trips between San Diego and Portland, Salt Lake City and Seattle.

Holiday travelers at San Diego International were making the best of it on Wednesday, with only a single flight canceled as of 5:30 p.m., though passengers on 68 aircraft were delayed for a variety of reasons, according to FlightAware.
