While many of the San Diego Fleet Week events were canceled due to the federal shutdown, the Fleet Week Foundation rescheduled the annual Enlisted Recognition Luncheon to Friday.

With the shutdown ending, more than 300 sailors, marines, and coast guardsmen will be able to join 200 members of the San Diego community at one of the longest-standing Fleet Week events.

“I am extremely proud that I can lend my name to this prestigious Fleet Week event,” said Bruce Browne, Master Chief Petty Officer, Navy (Ret.), sponsor of the luncheon. “The men and women of today’s Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, not only excel at their primary jobs defending our country but also give so much of their time serving our community.

“It really makes an old sailor like me very proud to see these young folks continuing the traditions of those who went before them.”

The event, to be held at the San Diego Zoo, will feature the presentation of the Making A Difference Award, which recognizes active-duty members of the Sea Services (Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard).

“This award is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary impact our service members make in San Diego, and it aligns directly with our mission to make community possible by supporting those who strengthen and serve our local community,” said Jay Henslee, vice president and district manager of U.S. Bank, the sponsor of the award.

More than 30 nominations were submitted this year. Shannon MacMillan, vice president for community relations of San Diego Wave FC, a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning team, and a gold and silver medalist from the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, will be the event’s guest speaker.
