Meet Rosie, newest penguin to waddle through Aquarium of Pacific

A new Magellanic penguin has joined the Aquarium of the Pacific as the public was invited to see the latest addition interact with other penguins, aquarium officials said Friday.

Rosie, the 4-year-old female penguin with a hot pink, orange and yellow band around her flipper, is described to be quiet, curious and playful. She has been adjusting to her new life at the June Keyes Penguin Habitat inside the Long Beach aquarium.

“She seems like she will be a bright addition to the group with her curious and social nature,” said Ashley Loper, aviculturist at the Aquarium of the Pacific. “We are looking forward to getting to know her as she settles in and begins to explore our habitat.”

One of the things penguin caregivers have learned is that Rosie enjoys the aquarium’s restaurant-quality food, including capelin, squid and herring, which is her favorite.

Rosie came from a facility that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, a nonprofit for animal welfare and conservation.

Magellanic penguins are a medium-sized species, native to the coasts of Argentina and Chile, the aquarium said.

Visitors are encouraged to view Rosie and the rest of the penguin family at the aquarium in person or on the aquarium’s live webcam.
