Lions Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow comes out of retirement

Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow is coming out of retirement and will rejoin the Detroit Lions.

Ragnow retired from the NFL in June after spending seven seasons with Detroit, but with the season hitting the stretch run, he will rejoin the Lions and try to get them back into the postseason.

The Lions shared a picture of Ragnow on social media on Wednesday afternoon, just one day before their Thanksgiving game against the Green Bay Packers.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Ragnow was officially reinstated Wednesday from the league’s reserve/retired list. He will now be placed on the exempt/commissioner permission list, and he’ll continue to work his way into game shape, according to Schefter’s report.

Ragnow has started 96 NFL games over seven seasons. He made the Pro Bowl in each of his last three seasons, and was a second-team All-Pro in the last two seasons with the Lions.

According to reports, Ragnow is expected to take back his center spot, moving around the Lions’ offensive line down the stretch.

The Lions and Packers will get underway Thursday at noon, with the game airing on Fox. The Lions will then return to the field next Thursday when they host the Dallas Cowboys at Ford Field.

The Lions enter play this week with a 7-4 record on the season, and are a half-game behind the San Francisco 49ers for the final wild card spot in the NFC. They’re also one game behind the Chicago Bears in the NFC North, and currently hold the tiebreaker after beating Chicago earlier this season. The two teams will wrap up the regular season against one another in early January.
