Most buildings are designed to be seen. These ones are designed to be used and forgotten shortly after. Restrooms, laundromats, charging depots and garbage stations. The kind of places you pass through quickly, with low expectations (and even lower design standards!). But that’s starting to change. Across different contexts, architects are paying attention to the overlooked parts of daily life, treating them with the same level of thought as more celebrated projects. To support this idea, we’re sharing a collection of spaces that still do their job, just with more care and presence than anyone usually expects. Milence Truck Charging By Proof of the sum, Europe Popular Choice Winner, Transportation Project, 13th Architizer A+Awards Functional, exposed and rarely comfortable for the people who rely on them, truck charging sites are treated as mere infrastructure. But this project takes a different stance. Developed with Milence, the hub supports electric freight transport while focusing on the driver experience. Clear circulation routes guide trucks through the site with ease. Large laminated timber structures provide shelter during charging and create a recognizable form. The use of wood softens the scale of the space, supported by lighting, signage and planting. Built with prefabricated, modular elements, the system can be repeated across Europe, giving this type of infrastructure a more considered and consistent identity.
