(KRON) — Over the summer, a Facebook post within Bay Area circles started to spread about a new admission-based social app. The post alleges that the Clockout app only accepts people making more than $80,000.
The Facebook post from August garnered mixed reactions.
There were comments like “That’s still low income in the Bay Area,” “What’s actually wild is that in SF, that salary is still low income” and “Thats not really an exclusive club in California. It’s above poverty level for the country but still at risk of scarcity.”
However, after unsuccessful efforts to reach Clockout representatives in August, founder and CEO Krishna Dosapati finally cleared the air.
Dosapati denied the alleged $80,000 salary requirement to join the app.
“That’s not a real requirement,” Dosapati wrote in a message to KRON4 on Thursday. “The real requirement is that you’re a working professional.”
Content creators have accused Clockout of only accepting applicants in tech, commerce, finance and law. Dosapati said the app skews “acceptances to tech, finance, consulting, medicine, and law.” She added the app has “tons” of users in healthcare, education, marketing and policy.
According to Dosapati, the applications are reviewed by a combination of AI and humans. Clockout’s exclusivity has also stirred controversies in cities like Phoenix and Tampa.
The app is live in New York City, California, Texas, Arizona, Boston, Washington D.C. and Florida.
“Technically you can download anywhere in the US but we haven’t launched in other areas,” Dosapati said.
The app intends to have these individuals congregate at a variety of Clockout-hosted events like galas, dinners and mixers. Clockout markets itself as a way to “meet the smartest people in your city.”
Clockout has almost 400,000 downloads, according to Dosapati.
Clockout’s description on the Apple App Store reads as follows:
