Cars struck by gunfire aimed at student outside El Sereno high school

Police were investigating gunfire Thursday that prompted officials to briefly place an El Sereno high school on lockdown.

The gunfire was reported around 3:37 p.m. in the parking lot of Woodrow Wilson High School, the LAPD said.

The suspected gunmen were chasing a student off campus and fired shots as they ran through a parking lot, according to LAUSD police. The gunfire struck two cars belonging to staff members.

The student was able to run inside the school building. No one was injured in the shooting.

One of the suspects is believed to have fled in a truck and the other on foot, according to police.

A student witness said she heard multiple shots ring out before the staff began implementing school safety protocols.

“I thought it was just fireworks, but then staff came, you know, rushing us to go to the nearest classroom and stuff like that,” said Selena Gonzalez.

Parents were allowed to pick up students after the lockdown was lifted. Access through the front of the school on Multnomah Street remained closed to the public as the investigation continued, LAUSD PD said.

“This afternoon, there was a shooting along the outside perimeter of our campus, near Multnomah Street and Wilson Way. No students or staff were harmed. Two vehicles in our parking lot were struck, but the incident remained outside our school. The Los Angeles Police Department is leading the investigation. A suspect has not yet been identified. Out of an abundance of caution, the Los Angeles School Police Department will have extra patrols in the area tomorrow,” said an LAUSD spokesperson.

LAPD is still investigating the motive for the shooting. Anyone with information on the gunfire is asked to contact police.
