Broncos practice squad QB Sam Ehlinger turns down offer to return to Colts

Sam Ehlinger had an interesting start to the week. The Broncos practice squad quarterback spent about 48 hours after Denver’s win in Las Vegas weighing an opportunity to return to Indianapolis for the stretch run of the season, he told The Denver Post on Wednesday. Ehlinger said his agent had extensive talks with the Colts after their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, tore his Achilles on Sunday. Indianapolis ultimately brought in 44-year-old Philip Rivers for a Monday workout and signed him to the practice squad five years after he last saw live NFL action. Rivers could start as soon as Sunday for the Colts in Seattle. Ehlinger said he’s happy in Denver with the 11-2 Broncos trying to make a deep run in the postseason. “I think a lot,” Ehlinger said when asked what went into the decision to stay in Denver. “We’re really happy here and enjoy the organization, the path we’re on and what we’re building. I want to be part of that. “I was in Indianapolis for four years and I love everybody over there. It’s just a difficult situation, obviously.” Ehlinger was a sixth-round pick out of Texas by the Colts in 2021 and spent the first four seasons of his career there. He started three games, all in 2022, and appeared in eight total between 2021-23. Ehlinger indicated the Colts were trying to bring him in likely along with Rivers.
