Clarifying Amazon’s role in the gaming business — it’s not a retreat | Jeff Gattis interview

Jeff Gattis has had to clarify Amazon’s role in the games business, especially after it scaled back many of the e-commerce company’s game development efforts. And no, his answer is not that you can call Amazon the Tomb Raider company. Even with some widely reported layoffs, Amazon still has meaningful gaming operations, including its Amazon Luna cloud gaming service, the Prime Games store for free titles for Prime members, Amazon Game Studios, Amazon Web Services for game hosting, and Twitch livestreaming. Gattis oversees the games business, especially Luna and Amazon Game Studios. It certainly looked like the company was pulling back. Its massively multiplayer online gaming efforts have been hit hard, with New World MMO shutting down and development on an MMO based on The Lord of The Rings being discontinued. At the same time, Amazon secured the James Bond game license and 007 First Light from Delphi Interactive, and it also asked Crystal Dynamics to create Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a brand-new adventure, along with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original Lara Croft game from Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog.
