Al Sharpton This year, Juneteenth arrives at a defining moment in this nation’s life. It calls us to meet the moral obligation this country has too often failed to uphold. We know all too well that justice delayed is no accident; it is a choice. So let’s be clear: the work is not done. When enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, they were receiving a truth that had been intentionally kept from them. On June 19th, we remember that injustice and condemn every force that has tried to make people plead for what is already theirs. We are living in a time when old battles have new names and new machinery. We are fighting for voting rights because there are still those who want to stop our people from choosing their leaders. We are fighting redistricting schemes as representation is sliced up and weakened behind closed doors. We are fighting for affordability and labor rights because freedom means nothing if families cannot live with dignity. We must not be caught sleeping while others try to turn back the clock. This Juneteenth, let us honor the past by refusing to give up the present. The work is not done. The dream is still unfinished, and we must not go silent…
