Philly sanitation worker opens fire at facility, runs from police, officials say

A sanitation worker was charged after allegedly shooting a gun at a Philadelphia facility and then running from police in November, according to the police department.

Witnesses told police that a man was acting erratically when he entered a Department of Sanitation facility on the 3900 block of North Delaware Avenue just after 7 p.m. on Nov. 26, officials said.

The man, identified as 61-year-old Nelson Slaughter, eventually left the facility before later returning and firing two gunshots into the building, police said.

While investigating in the area, officers said they saw a man who matched the description of Slaughter made by the witnesses and tried to stop him.

Police said that Slaughter ran away from them and allegedly threw a gun over a fence before he was eventually arrested.

Crews with the Philadelphia Fire Department helped officers get the gun from the property, officials said.

Police explained that Slaughter is a sanitation worker who is assigned to a different team from where this incident happened.

Slaughter was charged with aggravated assault, burglary and other related charges.
