A roadside worker was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle on Monday afternoon along Interstate 65 in northwest Indiana, authorities said.
The collision was reported at approximately 2:30 p.m. along the southbound lanes of the interstate near 61st Avenue near Merrillville.
Police said the driver of a white 2006 Chevrolet Silverado left its lane for an unknown reason and struck a 2021 Ford F-150, which was parked on the right shoulder. The Ford, which was pulling a utility trailer, was operated by Interstate Business Solutions, a contractor whose employees work along interstates picking up trash and debris, Indiana State Police said.
The force of the collision pushed the F-150 into a worker, who was standing outside of the pickup and collecting debris in the ditch. Following the crash, the Silverado came to rest in the right lane. The worker was seriously hurt and flown to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment, police said.
The driver of the Silverado was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.
