WATCH: Suburban dad shares wholesome moments with son through doorbell camera

Donny Pomerlee knew with his work schedule he would miss some of the seemingly small, but special moments with his kids.

Simple things like sending them off to school in the morning were some of the moments he found himself longing to be a part of as he headed to his job at a suburban Chicago car dealership.

The Yorkville dad said it was during that time that he noticed his son and daughter, ages 3 and 5, would ring their doorbell on their way to school many mornings. He started watching them leave from his Ring doorbell camera, but then, he decided to become a part of their routine.

“I was missing a lot of their first days … so every day I noticed they ring the bell to and from. So I just started jumping on there just to, you know, say, ‘Hi’ and ‘love you’ and ‘have a good day’ and all that. So it just kind of became an everyday thing,” Pomerlee said.

Pomerlee began keeping the recordings of his wholesome interactions with his kids.

“I’ve probably got like 100 more videos of them doing that and saying, ‘Love you, daddy,’ and ‘bye’ and all that,” he told NBC Chicago.

Pomerlee said missing those moments was challenging, but the routine is now a cherished part of his day.

“My heart just melts because they’re my kids. A lot of times I can’t be there. So it just melts talking to them and then they’d be excited in the camera,” he said.

Donny Jr., 3, said he enjoys telling his dad “have a good day” and “love you” through the cameras. He also sometimes enjoys making funny faces in the camera for his dad to see.

Calling it a “real, honest dad-and-son moment,” Pomerlee said he hopes that sharing this special tradition with his kids will bring a moment of inspiration and joy to others.

“I just want people to, you know, just see that just a dad and son relationship and just dad at all. Even the ones that work a lot, there’s little things like the cameras. You can just, you know, say hi to them and it makes their day too,” Pomerlee said.
