Who is Devin Jaramillo? Miami-Dade deputy, 27, killed in line of duty

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one of its deputies has died after he was shot while responding to a traffic stop on Friday.

Devin Jaramillo, 27, was shot shortly before 4 p.m. in the area of the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said he was “brutally attacked and he was murdered.”

“He’s not only a deputy, he’s a son, he’s a brother, and he is a friend,” Cordero-Stutz said in a news conference on Friday. “What happened to our deputy is not okay. He gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, defending us, defending you. And we need to understand as a society and as a community that that is just unacceptable.”

According to his LinkedIn page, Jaramillo studied criminal justice at the University of Central Florida.

He previously worked as a Coral Gables Police officer and was recognized as Officer of the Month in July 2023. He was honored for apprehending a package theft suspect for clearing out three other theft cases.

Back in August, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office recognized Jaramillo for a traffic stop that resulted in the seizure of 13 weapons and ammunition.

According to Cordero-Stutz, Jaramillo is a graduate of Lateral Class #6. His father is a retired Miami-Dade Police detective.

“At just 27 years old, he served our community with professionalism, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others,” she wrote on Facebook. “My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow deputies during this difficult time. Deputy Jaramillo’s legacy of integrity, compassion, and courage will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.”

Tributes poured in as news spread of the young deputy’s death.

“His loss is felt deeply across the South Florida community and beyond. Regardless of the color of our uniforms, there are no jurisdictional boundaries when one of our own is in need—or when one of our own has fallen. We all mourn together,” Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones said on Instagram.

“I am heartbroken to learn that Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Jaramillo, who was shot in the line of duty this afternoon, has tragically passed away,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said on X. “My deepest condolences go out to his family, loved ones, and colleagues as our entire community mourns this devastating loss.”

The Miami Marlins also posted their thoughts and prayers for Jaramillo’s family.
